Match Report @ Minster by Angela Gladwin
Minster
v Sellindge - Thursday, 28 April 2011
A wonderful afternoon!
The Minster bowlers were all very friendly, the
green fast and they have a lovely large clubhouse (which is 4 years
old), from which you can see the church spire. I see from their history
that in:
1987 - The wooden building at the side of the Green was demolished
during the notorious October storms (didn't we have the same problem),
in 1994 the new pavilion was razed to the ground by arsonists and after
much hard work a new pavilion was opened on Friday, 20 April 2007.
Margaret Sewell was lead, I was two and Brian Rawlings skip.
You could hear the children at the school at the far end of the green
playing, shouting and having fun before they were all told to be quiet.
They then sang the National Anthem which was followed by a countdown and
release of red, white and blue balloons which blew across the green.
Unfortunately, you can't see many balloons in the photo.
It was a very close game until we dropped a 7 before tea. Tea was very
welcome - large cups of tea, or coffee if required, and all my favourite
biscuits!

We won a few ends after tea to catch up, getting 1s or 2s but then lost
a few ends. I know it was 23 - 10 going into the last end. I fired and
the jack went to Minster who eventually got 5 shots.
We then went in for a drink, speeches and the raffle. As Lawrence tried
to say, "Its not the winning, its the taking part". His rink did win
though. Sellindge did better at the raffle - I won first prize - a
bottle of red wine, which I promised to share with Minster at the return
fixture in September, Sandy - a plant (which her rink tried to tell her
was the table decoration) and Gerald Jeans a pineapple.
Driving home there were a few spots of rain on the windscreen, but even
though it had got colder and windy after tea we were very lucky as the
cricket at Canterbury had to finish early due to rain.

Welcome to the 2011 Season
I am pleased to welcome members and visitors to the Sellindge and District Bowls Club web site. The 2011 season is now upon us and thanks to our greenkeeper and the dedicated band of members that work throughout the winter months, the club and green are looking in good shape. I hope you find this web site useful and my thanks go to John for setting it up. It just remains for me to say "enjoy your bowling".
